High-protein, low-calorie vegan Tartar sauce with Tofu and Capers

There are very few things that can beat the flavor of crispy potatoes wedges with a good vegan Tartar sauce, only if this wouldn't come packed with so much fat and extra calories.

But what if I tell you there is a recipe that can offer you the best of both worlds: the flavor of the Tartar sauce without the excess calories, higher protein content and more healthy nutrients?

This high protein, low-calorie vegan Tartar sauce with tofu and Capers is here to prove you this is possible so lets not waste too much time and jump right to it.

List of ingredients you will need for this high-protein, low-calorie vegan Tartar sauce

  • 500 g Tofu Soft regular tofu
  • 4 tbsp Caper brine
  • 2 tbsp Olive oil
  • 2 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 3 tbsp Minced onions
  • 3 tbsp Minced capers aprox 65g
  • 1 Minced Garlic clove small

Step by step instructions

  1. Add the tofu (crumble it into smaller pieces with your hands), capers brine, Dijon mustard, olive oil, and salt into the food processor and blend till smooth and creamy (aprox 5 minutes or more depending on the power of your food processor)
  2. Add the minced onion, garlic, and minced capers to the food processor and mix gently with a spatula till well combined (do not blend just mix and combine them with a spatula or spoon). Alternatively, you can use a bowl for this last step but I prefer to use the bowl of the food processor to avoid having an extra dish to wash
  3. Add the mixture into an airtight glass container and let it sit in the fridge for a few hours so that the ingredients have time to combine and give you the extra burst of flavors

Note

This high-protein, low-calorie vegan Tartar sauce combines great with almost every dish that uses Tartar sauce as an ingredient.

I love to combine it with potato wedges, corn, and chickpeas or add it as dressing to salads for an extra burst of flavor.

Enjoy!

Questions you might have about this vegan Tartar sauce recipe

Why use tofu as base for the sauce?

Tofu provides a versatile, plant-based alternative to traditional mayo, offering a creamy texture and a neutral taste that readily absorbs the flavors of the other ingredients.

Are there any specific types of tofu recommended for this recipe?

Soft regular tofu works best for this tartar sauce, ensuring a rich and creamy consistency.

What role do capers play in enhancing the flavor?

Capers contribute a delightful tanginess and brininess to the sauce, replicating the signature flavors of traditional Tartar sauce.

Can I store the leftovers, and how long will it stay fresh?

Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 5 to 7 days.

Are there any creative serving suggestions for this vegan Tartar sauce?

This tartar sauce shines as a dip for potatoes wedges and veggies, a spread for sandwiches or a flavorful topping for vegan burgers and tacos
