But first things first. What is Shikanji?

Shikanji, also known as Indian lemonade, is a traditional cooling beverage enjoyed across India, especially during the scorching summer months. This refreshing drink combines the tangy flavors of lime or lemon juice with spices and herbs, creating a unique blend that tantalizes the taste buds and revitalizes the body. Shikanji is more than just a drink; it's a cultural staple, often associated with home remedies for heat exhaustion and dehydration.

Why You'll Love This Drink

With the intense heat waves currently sweeping through Europe, there's no better way to stay cool and hydrated than with a glass of Shikanji. This particular recipe adds a twist by incorporating amchur (dried mango powder) and fresh mint, which not only enhance the flavor but also pack in extra health benefits. The tanginess of lime, the earthy notes of cumin, and the subtle sweetness of amchur make this drink an absolute delight. Plus, it's incredibly easy to prepare!

What is Amchur?

Amchur, or dried mango powder, is made from green mangoes that are dried and ground into a fine powder. It adds a tangy, fruity flavor to dishes and is commonly used in Indian cuisine to enhance the taste of curries, chutneys, and snacks. You can find amchur in most Indian grocery stores, specialty spice shops, or online retailers.

How to make this refreshing Shikanji (Indian Lemonade)

List of ingredients

  • 2 Cups Water Ice-cold
  • 1 Lime
  • 10 g Fresh mint leaves
  • ¼ tsp Amchur Mango powder
  • ¼ tsp Cumin powder
  • ¼ tsp Salt
  • 1 tbsp Maple syrup Or sweetener of your choice

Guidelines

  • Add all the ingredients: ice-cold water, lime juice, fresh mint leaves, amchur, cumin, and salt, one by one, to a blender.
  • Blend all the ingredients together.
  • Taste the Shikanji and adjust the sugar and salt if necessary. For a perfect Shikanji a balance between sweet, salty, and citrus is what we are looking for.
  • Pour the Shikanji into glasses and add ice cubes.
  • Garnish with slices of lime or extra mint leaves.
  • Alternatively you can create a spice mix rim on the glass with half of a lime and extra amchur powder or mix of all the spices we have added in the Shikanji for a fancy cocktail experience.
  • Serve immediately and enjoy the refreshing, tangy taste.

Enjoy!

NOTES

Ensure the Shikanji is well-chilled before serving. You can prepare it in advance and refrigerate it for a few hours to enhance its refreshing quality.

Pair Shikanji with light snacks like salted nuts, roasted chickpeas, or fresh fruit slices for a complete and satisfying refreshment.

Shikanji is not just a drink; it's a delightful experience that encapsulates the essence of Indian summer refreshment. This amchur and fresh mint-enhanced version brings a unique twist to the classic recipe, adding layers of flavor and health benefits that are perfect for the current heat waves in Europe. Whether you're enjoying it alone or serving it at a summer gathering, Shikanji is sure to impress with its vibrant flavors and healthful properties.
